Adoption Process and Fees

We encourage you to visit our shelter.  To adopt a pet from Humane Haven Animal Shelter, drop by during our adoption hours and visit with the many dogs and cats available for adoption.

Where HHAS Pets Come From

Animals come to our shelter because they were lost, abandoned, or unable to be kept by a previous owner.  Nearly 90% come from Bolingbrook Animal Control.

Our Pledge of Care

Our pledge is to care for and protect the pets at HHAS and to find and place them in a loving, caring household for the rest of their natural life.  They receive medical exams and tests, basic vaccinations, and preventative medication.   HHAS provides premium foods, medical care, clean, safe shelter and multiple daily doses of affection.  HHAS ensures that all pets adopted are spayed/neutered.   Our dogs are walked outdoors at least three times a day.  Our cats enjoy regular playtime with dedicated volunteers.

Adoption Procedure

To maximize the success of an adoption, we strive to help you find a pet that is compatible with your family and lifestyle.  Same day adoptions do not occur.

bulletAn adoption applicant must be at least 21 years of age and provide picture identification (Illinois drivers license) that states correct address and telephone number.
bulletApplicants must live within a 1 1/2 hour drive of the shelter.
bulletTo complete an adoption, a MINIMUM of 2 visits to the shelter must be made.
bulletAs there are a limited number of adoption counselors, unless you are the first client to arrive, expect to wait.
bulletAn adoption application must be completed and reviewed with an HHAS adoption counselor.  This takes approximately 30 minutes.  All members living in the household must be present during the interview.
bulletIf there are multiple concurrent applications being processed for any one HHAS pet, it is the right/best match applicant(s) that is selected.
bulletIf any potential pet matches are identified during the interview, then the applicant(s) will meet those pet(s).
bulletIf the application for adoption is approved (notification occurs within 2 days), then the prospective adopter(s) are asked to give serious consideration about the decision to adopt and to leave a message as to their decision.
bulletUpon decision to adopt, an adoption contract and spay/neuter agreement is executed and the adoption fee is paid.  HHAS accepts cash or checks as payment.
bulletAdoptive families must be willing to allow an authorized representative of HHAS to make an adoption follow-up(s) either in person or by telephone.
bulletAll family members should be present at the first interview.

 Adoption Fees

The adoption fees are $100 for cats and kittens, $130 for puppies and dogs. The adoption fee includes a veterinary examination, fecal, spaying/neutering, microchipping and all distemper vaccinations; cats are Feline Leukemia tested, dogs are heartworm tested and receive heartworm preventative.  In addition to the adoption fees there is an additional spay/neuter deposit - $50 for puppies and $35 for kittens. If the spay/neuter is done at VCA then the deposit is not returned.  If done elsewhere, the adopter must provide proof of the procedure and the deposit will be returned or the adopter may donate the deposit.

If you cannot find a pet that everyone in your family loves at HHAS, then we encourage you to keep looking (either at HHAS or other shelters) until you find the right pet for you.

Humane Haven Animal Shelter (HHAS) is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt state licensed humane society.  All money used in the operation of the shelter is through fundraising and private donations.  No tax dollars apply.  HHAS reserves the right to deny any applicant interested in adopting a pet.
